There is a long list of big names whose careers have been ‘powered by Volkswagen’ on their way to the very top. The most successful drivers in formula, sports car and touring car series, including Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen and Bernd Schneider, have passed through this formula school, backed by the marque from Wolfsburg. Schumacher’s seven Formula One world titles, Kristensen’s nine wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Schneider’s five DTM titles remain unparalleled. Other big names from the world of motor sport have passed through the formula school in Formula König, Formula Volkswagen, the ADAC Formula Masters, Formula 3 and Formula Vee and Super Vee – including Keke Rosberg, Dr Helmut Marko, Niki Lauda, Ellen Lohr, Jochen Mass and Kris Nissen. In 2018, Volkswagen withdrew from Formula 3, ending its involvement in the formula series for young drivers – but not without having boosted the careers of Edoardo Mortara, António Félix da Costa and most recently Dan Ticktum with victories at the legendary Macau Grand Prix. With a total of eleven wins, Volkswagen remains the most successful engine supplier at the Formula 3 World Cup in Macau.
