“A perfect end to a fantastic season,” said a jubilant Kristoffersson after taking victory number twelve in the final race in Cape Town (South Africa). “We have had a fantastic atmosphere in the team all year, everybody did their very best for me. I would like to thank them for that. It means an awful lot to me.” Kristoffersson ended the year with 341 points to his name in the Drivers’ Championship. His advantage over second-placed Audi driver Mattias Ekström (S) was a full 93 points. Team principal Petter Solberg, who finished fifth overall, also thanked his team. “Every single person showed great passion and irrepressible commitment to this sport, and spent many weekends with us away from home. Without them, this fantastic success would not have been possible.”
“Incredible. We’ve done it again,” said a delighted Pernilla Solberg, who runs the team together with her husband Petter. “I am unbelievably proud of what we have achieved as a team.” There was also praise from Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets: “Congratulations to PSRX Volkswagen Sweden, and especially Johan, on a fantastic season. He is a really worthy champion.”
Kristoffersson and Solberg have won four out of a possible four world titles with their 419-kW (570-PS) Volkswagen Polo R Supercars in 2017 and 2018. In all 24 rounds, the two Scandinavians have reached the semi-finals, which feature the top twelve drivers. At least one PSRX Volkswagen Sweden driver has progressed to the final at every single event during this period. On 19 occasions, one of the two drivers climbed onto the very top step of the podium – that is a win rate of 79.17 percent.
