FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC)
Nasser Al-Attiyah clinches second victory in Polo GTI R5
Once again, this time in the second round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q) toppled the competition in the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. At the Jordan Rally together with his co-driver Mathieu Baumel (D), the 14-time MERC champion won 18 of 21 special stages, finishing with a 4:08.2-minute advantage over the second-placed Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Q, Škoda) after 244 classified kilometres. For Al-Attiyah, this was the eighth win in a row at the Jordan Rally, his 13th overall there as well as his 71st triumph in the MERC.
“Today is a really special day for us,” said Al-Attiyah – who won the Dakar Rally with Volkswagen in 2011 – after the victory. “I’m very happy for this win and to be leading the overall rankings after the victories in Qatar and here in Jordan.” The third of a total five rounds in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) will be held in Lebanon from 30 August to 1 September.
