Volkswagen drivers pick up valuable points in Vila Real
For the second time, the WTCR – FIA Touring Car World Cup was hosted in Vila Real, Portugal. The sixth round on the tradition-steeped circuit brought the Volkswagen driver important points. Rob Huff (GB) finished the first qualifying session in fourth after he had first led the field. In the first of three races this weekend, the Briton finished fourth on the city circuit, taking 13 championship points and also the second fastest lap time. Team-mate and Vila Real rookie Johan Kristoffersson (S) finished seventh. Things were less happy for Benny Leuchter (D), who was also competing for the first time in Vila Real, and team-mate Mehdi Bennani (MA). Leuchter finished in 16th place, with Bennani in 22nd place.
In the second race on Sunday, Huff took his Golf GTI TCR to seventh place. Kristoffersson finished in 14th place and Leuchter came in 17th. Mehdi Bennani finished the second race in 20th place. In the last of the three races Huff improved and finished in sixth place. Kristoffersson advanced to eleventh place and Bennani to 14th. Leuchter crossed the finish line in 18th in the last race.
After six rounds and 18 races, Rob Huff, Johan Kristoffersson and Benny Leuchter are 13th, 15th and 16th place in the overall standings respectively. Mehdi Bennani is in 26th position. For the seventh round of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup, the quartet in the Golf GTI TCR head to the Chinese Ningbo after the summer break. There, the action continues on 14 and 15 September.
