FIA World Rally Championship
Third place for Johan Kristoffersson in the Polo GTI R5
Even Johan Kristoffersson (S) did not expect that: at the Rally Finland, the ninth round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), the Swedish ace driver in the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 achieved a fantastic third place in the WRC2 classification. After 23 special stages and a challenging 307.58 kilometres, the 30-year-old with co-driver Stig Rune Skjærmoen (NOR) were only beaten by Nikolay Gryazin/Yaroslav Fedorov (RUS/RUS, Škoda) and runner-up Jari Huttunen/Mikko Lukka (FIN/FIN, Hyundai).
“To be on the podium here in our first appearance is more than I ever expected – we are really delighted with third place,” said Kristoffersson, who otherwise competes in the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup. “We started well and kept improving over the weekend. This result makes us very optimistic about the upcoming rallies in Sweden.”
Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen (FIN/FIN) had a difficult time in the second Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. The first day ended prematurely for the duo after an excursion from the track. On Saturday, the Finns got going again in their home race, but a suspension breakage slowed down their fight-back. Lindholm and Korhonen, however, underlined their class and that of the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 with a total of ten best times.
