German Rally Championship (DRM)
Riedemann wins the home rally of the Polo GTI R5
Christian Riedemann and Michael Wenzel (D/D) won the ADAC Rallye “Rund um die Sulinger Bärenklaue” to claim the maiden victory in the German Rally Championship (DRM) for the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. A strong drive and top times saw them defeat championship leaders Fabian Kreim and Tobias Braun (D/D, Škoda) by 28.4 seconds. Hermann Gassner jr. and Ursula Mayrhofer (D/A, Hyundai) completed the podium.
The fourth event of the DRM season featured the strongest field so far, with a total of twelve competitors in the top class for R5 cars. The strength in depth was apparent as early as Friday evening, when the lead changed hands four times on the first four special stages. Riedemann ended the day with a slender 0.9-second lead, which he then extended consistently on Saturday morning. A further three stage wins helped the man from Sulingen to take the overall victory. “It is an awesome feeling to win my home rally again, having previously won in 2012 and 2016. We had great support from the team and the crowd, who really cheered us on. I would like to thank all the partners who have made this possible for us,” said the delighted winner at the finish.
