Volkswagen drivers pick up points in China
The Volkswagen drivers in the Sébastien Loeb Racing team endured a difficult race weekend in Ningbo (China). However, they did manage to score valuable points towards the championship at round seven of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup. Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson (S) had a good qualifying in the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR and started the opening race from fifth on the grid. He dropped three places on a fiercely-competitive first lap, but was then able to hang on to take the chequered flag in eighth place. Team-mate Robert Huff (GB) started from 17th but produced a strong performance to climb into tenth place.
Race two got off to an eventful start, with a number of collisions on the opening lap. Among the victims was Volkswagen driver Benjamin Leuchter (D), who was unable to finish the race. Following a safety car phase, the action resumed on lap six. The onset of rain made conditions increasingly difficult. Rob Huff kept his nerve to cross the finish line in seventh place – the best result of the race weekend, from a Volkswagen perspective. Team-mates Mehdi Bennani (MA, 12th place) and Kristoffersson (13th) also finished in the points.
The Volkswagen drivers also picked up points in race three, which Leuchter was unable to start after the crash in the previous race. Bennani fell back through the field following contact with Tiago Monteiro (P, Honda), but managed to salvage 14th place. Kristoffersson had more joy: the Swede finished tenth to claim his second top-ten result of the weekend.
