Racing Car

The Scirocco R Cup.

The Cup Scirocco was the most eco-friendly racing car in the world: its 2.0-litre TSI engine was powered by natural gas, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent in comparison to conventional fuels. For racing use, the Volkswagen technicians had specially optimised the TSI engine to run on CNG (‘compressed natural gas’). The result was a full 235 hp and an impressive 275 newton metres of torque.

One particular highlight was the innovative push-to-pass system: at the touch of a button, the drivers could briefly increase the charging pressure and release an extra 50 horsepower, guaranteeing thrilling overtaking manoeuvres and uncompromising wheel-on-wheel duels.

In terms of power transmission, the technical team had opted for the direct-shift gearbox (DSG), which Volkswagen fits on numerous road models. The dual-clutch transmission with six steps was controlled using a shift paddle on the steering wheel. A gear lever was also available in the centre console.

There was a big focus on safety in the Scirocco R Cup: the Cup Scirocco had been equipped with a roll cage and a fire extinguishing system in line with FIA norms. The tank was protected by the roll cage. Also on board was a racing seat with padded head protection. A six-point safety harness and the obligatory HANS system protected the driver in the event of an accident.
