Polo R Cup India, 15.12.2014

Karthik Tharani crowned champion with hat-trick.

With a victory hat-trick in the regular driver rankings, Karthik Tharani (IND) has been crowned champion in the season finale of the Volkswagen Polo R-Cup India. In the final race on the Formula 1 course at Greater Noida (IND) on Sunday, the 20 year-old student caught up with Karminder Pal Singh (IND), who had been the clear leader in the rankings up to that point. For him, third, fourth and seventh position in the regular drivers table was ultimately not enough.

A brilliant performance was also shown by the guest drivers, who were not entitled to receive any points. In the first race, German Andre Gies, who drove in the Scirocco R-Cup this year, took third place alongside Tharani's victory. In the second and third races, national karting champion Ameya Bafna (IND) triumphed in a surprising result. As he wasn't entitled to receive any points however, second-placed Tharani took the full number of points for the victory and took home the title.

William Lok snatches the title

from Mantori with a double victory.

Old hand William Lok secured the title in the Scirocco R-Cup China in a Volkswagen with a double victory at the season finale. The 41 year-old from Hong Kong had already won both races at the start of the season on the course in Zhuhai (CN) and repeated this coup at the same location in races nine and ten of the season. In both training sessions and the two qualifiers, Carlo Piero Mantori (I), who had been the clear leader in the championship before the final, had been the quickest driver.

But in both races, he wasn't able to successfully defend his pole position. In the first race in Zhuhai, he managed to gain second place behind Lok, but only managed eighth in the deciding race. This meant that Lok slid past the Italian in the overall rankings of the one-make cup with 108 points against his 103. A convincing performance at the season finale also saw German brand Engel appear twice on the podium in third and second place.

The two contenders for the championship went into the final weekend of the season with 126 points apiece.

Wolk won the first race ahead of van Weely after ten laps, with a lead of 0.738 seconds. Things then took a dramatic turn in the second race: Wolk was slapped with a 30-second penalty for a jump start and ended up at the back of the pack at the end of ten laps. This left things open for van Weely, who won not only the last race of the season, but also the championship as a whole ahead of Wolk and Werner Scholtz (ZA).

Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia, 27.10.2014

A lucky champ and a brilliant rookie.

Alexey Ignatov (RUS) has clinched the title in the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia. Ignatov made do with fourth place in Rally Tmutarakan, the final event of the 2014 season, to win the championship. This outcome didn’t actually look all that likely during the two-day rally as Ignatov struggled with some tyre trouble on his Polo. But his main rival Arkady Bogomolov (RUS) had his own problems, with his gearbox, and ultimately only managed to finish in sixth place, leaving the championship title open for Ignatov.

The final rally of the season was won by newcomer Denis Rostilov (RUS), who pushed Yury Uryukov (RUS) and Andrey Vavilin (RUS) into second and third place respectively over the eight special stages with an aggregate distance of 112 kilometres. A total of eight teams lined up to compete in the final rally of the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia season.

The final race of the series, in which racing vehicles are based on the Volkswagen Beetle, took place on the Nogaro track in the South-West of France and lasted a total of eight hours.

At the beginning of the race, everything pointed towards a gripping battle between Defi baticonfort and their closest rival in the championship, the Alain Ferté team with Benoit Duppassage, Philippe Lemoine and Elliot Hoffet as its drivers. After just one hour however, technical problems led to the retirement of team Ferté, clearing the way for Defi baticonfort. Kupcikas clinches second Volkswagen Castrol Cup Poland title.

Eight years after his first championship win, the Lithuanian Robertas Kupčikas has once again clinched the title in the Volkswagen Castrol Cup Poland. The 31-year-old made do with two fourth places at the season final in the Polish city of Poznan to take the championship title, to add to his 2006 Volkswagen Castrol Cup win.

“The level has increased dramatically since then. I’m now wiser and more experienced than I was back then,” said Kupčikas, who won eight of the season’s 14 races. It was, however, other drivers who took the top spot on the podium at the last event of the season, with race wins being scored by Jakub Litwin of Poland and Jeffrey Kruger of South Africa.

Kruger also took second place overall on 528 points, behind Kupčikas on 576. Jan Kisiel of Poland was ranked third overall on 430 points, making him the best-placed Polish competitor. Wolk pipped van Weely to the post by 3.496 seconds in the first race. And it looked like the 29-year-old would have a perfect weekend for much of the second race too.

However, Wolk then suffered a flat tyre and saw his rival overtake him in the closing stages of the race. In spite of his problems, Wolk still finished in second place, trailing van Weely by a mere 0.940 seconds.

The season final in Zwartkops on 1 November looks set to be a dramatic duel for the overall title, with Wolk and van Weely going into the final event on an equal footing of 126 points.

In the second race, Mantori finished 1.275 seconds ahead of Engel, with Patrick Boulaud of Hong Kong securing third place.

Congrats on title number three, Joe.

Joe Fulbrook (GB) has claimed his third title in the Volkswagen Racing Cup Great Britain. Fulbrook ended the season just four points clear of runner-up Lucas Orrock (GB) in a Scirocco R. The 33-year-old could take some consolation from the fact that he won the rookie competition ahead of Stefan Di Resta.

The final wins of the season went to last year’s champion Aaron Mason (GB) and Irish rally specialist Robert Barrable. Five drivers were still in contention for the title coming into the final race, which just goes to show how evenly matched the competition is in the most popular Volkswagen racing series.

Tough training pays off: twelve new drivers in the 2014 season.

The line-up of drivers for the 2014 season of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup India has been announced: twelve new drivers will be joining the one-make racing series. To get to this stage, the next generation of drivers first had to undergo some tough training: 23 carefully selected candidates went through a two-day selection process at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, to demonstrate what they were capable of.

Day one began with an introduction to the technology of the racing cars. After this it was time to hit the track, to tackle driving the ideal line, braking and accelerating, and also a slalom course – all under the watchful eye of Rayomand Banajee, a Polo R Cup instructor and multiple Indian karting champion. The candidates then had to drive two timed laps around the track. By the end of the day, 16 of the 23 candidates had made it into the next round.

The pressure was then stepped up during the second selection day, with the remaining candidates being required to demonstrate what they had learned on day one and also increase their potential. In addition to their technical vehicle control, aspects that were now also taken into account in the evaluation of the drivers were their aggressiveness and their fitness. This involved various strength exercises and also cardio and treadmill training.

The South African guest entrant Jordan Lee Pepper, who won this year’s Scirocco R-Cup in Germany, finished in 13th and seventh place in the event’s two races.

Robert Wolk and Nicholas van Weely (both of South Africa) engaged in another thrilling duel over the seventh weekend of racing in the Formula Volkswagen South Africa in Killarney.

Talking of fitness, what could be better than rounding off a demanding day in the cockpit with a sweat-inducing fitness session? This involved various strength exercises and also cardio and treadmill training.

“This season, we are paying closer attention to a more specific selection process and to how the drivers develop,” explained Sirish Vissa, head of Volkswagen Motorsport India. “We chose drivers who are not only fast on the track, but who also demonstrate the will to improve themselves and to take the instructors’ criticisms on board.”
